The problem with calling the Trump effect reversible and only temporary is a concept known as the carbon budget.

This refers to the additional greenhouse gas emissions that the atmosphere can absorb without catastrophic results.

We’re at the verge of exceeding that level of cumulative emissions. However temporarily, Trump remains in power. What’s in the tunnel isn’t light, but smoke.

To be clear, curbing further emissions will always be more beneficial than failing to curb them. Switching to clean energy will remain worthwhile. Persistent climate activism must continue.

Yet, the Trump effect has used up so much of the carbon budget that preventing ecocidal catastrophe is no longer realistic. We blew it. We have definitively betrayed future generations. There’s no evading it. Climate-ocean crisis will now proceed for centuries. We could and should have prevented this agony, but we fell short. Reversibility is a pipe dream. We blew it.

The biggest economic loss during Trump will be short sighted industrial policy that will kneecap emerging US industry - green energy. Trumps policy harm high growth small / medium businesses in areas like clean energy, in favor of legacy players. This hurts the emerging players, but also harms the legacy players who get to stick their heads in the sand as they refuse to adapt.

Meanwhile world will move on without us. Our energy companies will stop leading energy. We will build green energy, but sadly we’ve just chosen not to be the leaders of an economic sector. Ceding ground to China and others.

I had to review my electric bills in 2020 to decide on solar.  Surprisingly electric rates were going down yearly starting 2017 so I decided against it because solar payments were increasing 3% every year.
